In recent years the message has been clear: the more protein, the better.
But a new study published in Cell questions whether a high protein intake really is the right strategy for anyone who wants to live longer and healthier. The researchers point instead to chronically high protein intake activating biological signaling pathways associated with aging, while a more moderate intake may in some contexts support healthy aging.
That does not mean protein is "bad". Protein is essential for muscle mass, function and recovery, especially as we get older. But it does mean that more is not always better, and that the optimal level likely depends on age, activity level and individual goals.
In longevity, there are rarely simple answers. What works best for maximal muscle growth is not necessarily what is best for a long and healthy life.
It is yet another reminder that biology is more complex than social media often makes it seem.
