Newly published research shows that physical activity is not only good for the heart, muscles and weight, it can also lower the risk of cancer and cancer-related mortality by counteracting age-related inflammation and immunosenescence.
The study, which included nearly half a million adults in the UK and the US, found that higher levels of aerobic exercise (117–500 min/week) were linked to lower levels of chronic inflammation, a key factor in the development of several forms of cancer.
Through advanced analyses of the immune system, the researchers saw that regular exercise:
- lowers inflammation markers
- reduces immunosenescence
- improves immune function, including increased activity of natural killer cells and T lymphocytes.
This provides a biological explanation for why physical activity does not only improve general health, it also promotes an immune system that can counteract cancer development over time.
Exercise is a strategy for cancer prevention, not only through weight loss or improved fitness, but via immunological mechanisms that counteract chronic inflammation and immune decline.
