Can your diet affect how fast the brain ages?

We have known for some time that the MIND diet is linked to a lower risk of Alzheimer's. New research now shows that it may also affect the brain's structure over time. In a study published in BMJ of 1,647 people followed for over 12 years, higher adherence to the MIND diet was linked to slower loss of grey matter, corresponding to several years of delayed brain ageing.

What is the MIND diet?

MIND combines two of the most well-documented dietary patterns: the Mediterranean diet and DASH (a blood-pressure-lowering diet).

The focus is on: green leafy vegetables, berries, nuts, olive oil, fish and legumes, while limiting sugar, processed food and red meat.

What does this mean in practice?

Brain health is not just about genes, but about what you do every day.

This study strengthens the picture that:

  • lifestyle affects the brain structurally
  • the effects are measurable over time
  • small choices, made consistently over years, matter

This is yet another example of a clear trend: we can influence the brain's ageing earlier than we thought, and more than we thought. And most importantly of all: small changes matter.
